FAQs

  • What is a DEFRA approved stove?

A Defra approved stove is an industry term for a smoke exempt (SE) stove which has been approved to burn specific fuels in a smoke control area that would usually not be allowed - ie. wood.

  • Can I still use my wood burning stove in Scotland?

In January 2022, new European regulations came into force to ensure that all new wood burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves and fireplaces that are manufactured must meet strict new guidelines known as Eco-design.

“Eco-design considers environmental aspects at all stages of the product development process, striving for products which make the lowest possible environmental impact throughout the product life cycle.”

    - definition by European Environmental Agency.

  • What can i burn in my wood burning stove?

    USE

    • Dry seasoned logs which have a moisture level of no more than 20% and have not been treated with paint, resins or other chemicals.
    • Dry softwood is less dense and burns quicker than dry hardwood which tends to have a longer lasting impact, and greater heat output.
  • What can i burn in my multi-fuel stove?

    USE

    • Dry seasoned logs and recommended smokeless fuels. You should refer to the manufacturer’s guide for their specific models.
  • What should i avoid burning?

    DO NOT USE

    • Cardboard, Plywood, Chipboard or Particleboard
    • Coloured Paper
    • Painted/Treated Wood
    • Christmas Trees
    • Wet/Green Wood
    • Household Plastics
    • Driftwood
  • Why does my stove smell when lit for the first time?

This smell is the paint curing on the stove. This is a common and perfectly normal thing to happen with a new stove. It can be quite a strong smell and can look quite hazy but this is not to be mistaken with smoke. We recommend you open a window when first lighting the stove, and don’t worry because it will only last 2-3 burns.

  • How often do i need to sweep my chimney?

It is best to have your chimney swept at least once a year but can be done more frequently if you notice changes in the draw from your chimney. It is always best to contact a registered chimney sweep to maintain your chimney.

  • Will any stove parts that will need replacing over time?

A stove has certain parts that will need maintaining and replacing over time due to wear and tear. The fire grate, firebricks (Vermiculite or cast iron) and throat plate can warp after a while as they are doing their job protecting the outer skin of the stove and can be replaced very easily if need be.
